Erectile Dysfunction/Impotence
Impotence is a condition when a man is unable to attain and maintain an erection necessary for intercourse. Medical terminology describes this condition as Erectile Dysfunction. For men erection occurs when the erectile tissue in the penis is engorged with blood making it swell and become hard. When a male is unable to develop or maintain an erection of the penis sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance the condition is called Erectile Dysfunction or ED. ED is indicated when an erection is consistently difficult or impossible to produce, despite arousal as well as trouble with ejaculation and orgasm. Impotence/ED is a common sexual disorder that medical experts believe affects all men at least once in a lifetime. There are many causes for ED from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, stress, obesity, as well as excessive use of alcohol and drugs. Any disorder that impairs blood flow in the penis has the prospective to cause impotence. Impotency can be caused by aging, about 5% of men at the age of 40 and 15-25% of men at the age of 65 experience impotence. One type of treatment for Impotence/ED is testosterone supplements for cases due to hormonal deficiency. ED can also be treated by drugs taken orally, injected, or as penile suppositories. Some of the common drugs prescribed for men with ED are Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. Injections into the erectile tissue of the penile shaft are also extremely effective but may cause priapism. Aerobic exercises are also an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. Other methods to treat ED may vary from using purpose-designed external vacuum pump to help attain and maintain erection, to Vacuum therapy, surgery, and also counseling. |
